    Evidence and assumptions

    Evidence mode exposes the epistemic status of mechanisms. Labels describe this documentary’s treatment, not a substitute for a scientific review.

    Strong evidence

    Large brains impose substantial energetic and developmental costs.

    Human neural tissue is metabolically expensive, and childbirth and prolonged development impose real constraints.

    Moderate evidence

    Cooperative care may have supported longer childhoods.

    Shared provisioning and childcare are consistent with the unusual dependency of human young.

    Plausible but disputed

    Cooking and food processing helped finance brain expansion.

    Energy availability is important; the timing and causal weight of cooking remain debated.

    Highly uncertain

    Language caused a specific acceleration in brain expansion.

    Language leaves no direct fossil record, making exact timing and causal claims difficult.
