Lost car title checklist.
A missing title is not automatically fraud, but it is a serious friction point. Do not treat a bill of sale or promise of title as the same thing as clear ownership.
Rule: no clear title path, no full payment.
Before buying when the title is missing
- Confirm the seller is the titled owner or has legal authority to sell.
- Ask why the title is missing.
- Check whether the title is electronic or lender-held.
- Verify VIN, lien status, and state replacement-title process.
- Do not release full payment until the replacement or transfer path is written and verified.
Safer next steps
The seller should usually replace the title first. If your state allows another process, confirm it with the DMV/title office before handing over money.
